Panning for Gold

A gold pan looks kind of like a pie pan but bigger and with sloped sides. Kind of like a wok, but smaller and lighter. Panning for gold isn't the only way to find it, but it IS the most fun. You get to wade out into a stream and play in the sand. You scoop some sand from the bottom and swish the water around in the pan to get rid of the lighter pieces of dirt and rock that float to the top. You have to keep swishing until the water is gone and then you can start poking around in what's left.

Somewhere in Wisconsin there is a picture of us panning for gold on our way to Alaska. I just looked for shiny bits, but gold isn't always shiny so I may have dumped some. We only found a few flakes and Bopa kept them in a film cannister.

Better than gold
