Caterpillars hatch out of eggs that have been laid on leaves.
When the caterpillar is older, it forms a cocoon around itself and kind of goes to sleep for a little while and big changes happen.
When it wakes up, its not a caterpillar anymore! It is now a butterfly. It breaks out of the cocoon and dries its wings off and starts to fly.
Later, the girl butterflies lay more eggs and the cycle starts over again.
There are mesh cages that you can buy to watch this whole process. You can buy caterpillars with special food that are ready to go into a cocoon. You put the container in the mesh cage, let nature take its course and soon the butterflies hatch and are ready to be released.
One time we had a kit when your mommy was young and they just HAPPENED to come out of their cocoons on the exact same day that we were flying to Wisconsin to see Gra-Gramma and Bopa. We REALLY had to leave for the airport so we wouldn't miss our plane but we stayed a little bit longer to watch them fly away anyway. Then Lulu made Pepe speed because he drives SLOW!
